Once again a member of the Garcia family, Miguel Angel “Mikey” Garcia, proves to the boxing world how tough the boxers are not only from his family but from the family’s gym in Oxnard, Ca. Eduardo Garcia, his father and trainer, is also the father and trainer of former Super Featherweight world champion Roberto Garcia, plus the former trainer of light middleweight world champion Fernando Vargas and former WBA lightweight world champion Brandon Rios.
And what better place to showcase your talent but at the famed Madison Square Garden Arena in Manhattan. Tonight in the Big Apple, Miguel Angel Garcia(31-0-0, 26 KOs), came away with an eight round, unanimous decision victory over Orlando Salido (39-12-2, 27 KOs) at Madison Square Garden. It was to be Salido’s third defense of a title he won back on March 10, 2012 in Puerto Rico, a stunning tenth round TKO victory over then champion Juan Manuel Lopez.
Using his powerful left hook, Garcia knocked Salido off his feet twice in Round #1. Then, in the third round, a right uppercut had Salido touching a glove to the canvas. In the fourth round, a stiff jab caught Salido off balance for a fourth knockdown. Even after Garcia had Salido hurt in the fifth round, Salido was like that Energizer Bunny who kept on coming.
Salido’s best round of the fight had to be the seventh when he continued to press forward and throw these wide power shots.
Then, in the eighth round an accidental ?? head-butt broke Garcia’s nose. After the round ended, the fight doctor took a look at the injury and decided to stop the fight even though the gritty Garcia wanted to continue. With the foul being declared an accident ??, the decision was sent to the scorecards. Judges Julie Lederman and John Stewart had it 79-69 and judge Don Ackerman scored the bout 79-70, all for the new WBO World Featherweight Champion Miguel Angel “Mikey” Garcia.
After the fight came a quote from Dr. Robert Polofsky, the ringside doctor, who said, “We went up to check him and his nose was very broken. He couldn’t breathe and it was too dangerous to have him continue to fight like that.”
In a Co-featured bout, it was middleweight titleholder Gennady Golovkin (R) of Kazakhstan defending his belt against Gabriel Rosado (L) of Philadelphia.
On the Undercard were two CO-featured bouts. One had 30 year-old, hard-punching middleweight titleholder Gennady Golovkin (25-0, 22 KOs) of Kazakhstan defending his belt against the 26 year-old Gabriel Rosado (21-5, 13 KOs) of Philadelphia.
The other CO-featured bout saw junior lightweight titlist Roman “Rocky” Martinez of Puerto Rico fight Juan Carlos Burgos of nearby Tijuana, B. C., Mexico to a draw.
The second CO-feature had more local interest as 29 year-old junior lightweight titlist Roman “Rocky” Martinez (26-1-1, 16 KOs) of Puerto Rico fought 24 year-old Juan Carlos Burgos (30-1, 20 KOs), of nearby Tijuana, B. C., Mexico in the opener of the broadcast to a draw.
The much taller Burgos, the mandatory challenger for Martinez’s title, did more than enough to take the belt. He appeared to be in control from the outset and connected on 286-of-805 of his punches in comparison to 193-of-827 for Martinez.
Post fight quote from Martinez: “Burgos is a big, strong difficult guy to fight; the last three rounds were very difficult. But I thought I won at least eight rounds. I know he thought he won and they will ask for a rematch. No problem.”

The Fight, scheduled to take place on March 9 at the Hangar on the OC Fairgrounds, will be televised by HBO. To formally announce the fight, there will be a Press Conference on Wednesday (January 23, 2013). All ticket info will be released at that time.
When questioned about Stiverne being a suitable opponent and maybe a pushover (the only boxer of note Stiverne beat as a professional is the 42 year-0ld Ray Austin in June of 2011. However, as an amateur, Stiverne beat both Robert Helenius (now 18-0-0, 11 KOs as a pro) and David Price (now 15-0-0, 13 KOs as a pro).

On Saturday night, “Niño Maravilla” Morales, the baby brother of the former world champ Erik Morales got the quickie win over Patricio Camacho (16-8-1) of Guasave, Sinaloa at the Convention Center in Villahermose, Tabasco, Mexico.
Alan Sanchez: “My fight (in February) will now be aired on Solo Boxeo (the Spanish Channel). The 6’1” Sanchez, a top welterweight contender at 12-2, is from Fairfield, CA. Alan and his brother Luis have visited our fair city many times to fight at the Four Points by Sheraton on Aero Drive in San Diego. In Sanchez’s last fight, he registered a second round TKO victory over Miguel Angel Munguia of Toluca, Mexico, Mexico.
