Results from Thompson Boxing’s “Night of Champions”
Thompson Boxing’s Night of Champions on Saturday, March 15, 2014, featured a visit from boxing’s elite from the present, past and future.

Thompson’s Boxing Promotions’ annual, private show “Night of Champions,” featured the return of a great many of their past super stars plus quite a few of their latest heavy hitters which included Chris Martin and Giovanni Santillan of San Diego.
In the evening’s Main Event it was light welterweight Jonathan Garcia (14-0, 11 KOs) of Watsonville, CA going up against 26 year-old Joaquin “Chico” Chavez (6-11-3, 2 KOs) of Los Angeles. As expected the taller and stronger Garcia dished out plenty of punishment on his way to a 6-round unanimous decision victory (59-54, 60-53, 60-53) on Saturday, March 15, at the Doubletree Hotel in Orange, CA.
Even though Garcia is considered a promising and talented fighter, we have to note his record is inflated. As of this date, he’s only fought two fighters with a winning record Rodolfo Armento (13-12-1, 10 KOs) and Pedro Arcos (8-5-0, 6 KOs).
In Saturday’s co-main event it was 23 year-old Daniel “The Baby Faced Assassin” Roman (8-2-1, 4 KOs) of Los Angeles going up against the 35 year-old veteran, super bantamweight Jose Angel “Bocho” Cota (8-11-1, 6 KOs) from Mexicali, B. C., Mexico in a scheduled six rounder. Roman used his speed, power, and younger legs to register a second round KO victory. Like his stablemate, Roman’s record is also padded. As of this date, not one of the fighters he has defeated has a winning record.
Also on the fight card, undefeated Colombian welterweight prospect Oscar Torres (2-0, 1 KO), who now lives in Los Angeles, knocked out southpaw Rashad Hughes (1-4-1, 1 KO) of Riverside, CA in the second round of their scheduled 4-round bout. Torres produced two knockdowns in the first round and two more in the second to score his first professional victory by knockout.
The event’s first fight was an “exhibition” between super bantamweights, 22 year-old Fernando Samaniego (6-0, 3 KOs) of Phoenix and 5’4” southpaw Isaac Zarate (7-1-0, 0 KOs) of San Pedro, CA. Samaniego and Zarate fought three, two-minute rounds. They say both fighters displayed excellent fundamentals and should be watched closely as their careers develop.
On closer inspection we discover Zarate has been on a much different path to glory than Samaniego who’s opponents have a combined record of 4 wins, 30 losses and one draw while Zarate has faced opponents with a combined record of (26-9-0).
Important to note: I’ve always been told one of the requirements of having a boxing show in the state of California and having it sanctioned by the California State Athletic Commission was this requirement that the promotion company have at least 24 rounds of boxing scheduled. This particular fight card had only 19 rounds scheduled.
With all the fury surrounding Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Golden Boy Promotions you would think all of the boxing promoters would be extra careful to cross all their T’s and dot all their I’s. Regardless, Thompson Boxing Promotions’ next show is scheduled for Friday, April 25 at the Doubletree Hotel in Ontario, CA plus one of their most celebrated fighters, Josesito Lopez is scheduled to fight on ESPN2 on April 24th.
