Results from last week where a title was on the line
Friday night, the current WBC minimum-weight champ and pride of the Trang’s Rassada District of Thailand, Oleydong Sithsamerchai, received a major scare when he was almost upset by fellow countryman Pornsawan Porpramook.

Oleydong Sithsamerchai vs. Pornsawan Porpramook for the WBC strawweight title (both boxers weighed in at 105 lbs.). The exciting fight ended in a draw. Judge: Franz Marti scored it 114-114, Judge: Benjamin Rendon 114-114 and Judge: Thawut Plumsamran 114-113 in favor of Oleydong Sithsamerchai.
This development was a major surprise. The last time the two met, November 27, 2008, the 25 year-old southpaw, Sithsamerchai, (34-0-1) won a unanimous decision, 120-108, 118-110 and 117-113.

Jan Zaveck vs. Rafal Jackiewicz (IBF welterweight championship) “I’m extremely disappointed with my performance,” said Polish welterweight contender Rafal Jackiewicz (36-9-1, 18 KOs) after his majority decision loss to IBF welterweight champion Jan Zaveck (30-1, 17 KOs) on Saturday night at the Sportpark Arena in Ljubljana, Slovenia. Jackiewicz, the only fighter who has ever defeated Zaveck (in 2008), continued “Everything was great before I stepped into ring. Three months of great training camp, perfect conditioning, perfect sparring sessions and I thought best fight disposition in my life. Those 12,000 plus fans cheering for Jan did not influence the way I was boxing. I just didn’t do what we worked on all those tough, hard months with my training staff.”

Humberto Soto vs. Urbano Antillon (WBC lightweight championship) was cancelled. Soto will now fight a 12 rounder with Fidel Monterrosa Munoz (23-1-0, 18 KO’s) on September 18, 2010 in Culiacan, Sinaloa, Mexico.

Roman Martinez vs Ricky Burns (WBO junior featherweight championship). The Scot pulled a big upset in Glasgow on Saturday night when he took the title from Martinez. Jason Booth should take encouragement from Burns’ title triumph. Booth (35-5) challenges Canadian Steve Molitor (32-1) for the IBF super-bantamweight title at Rainton Meadows Arena, Houghton-le-Spring on Saturday night (11th Sept) and like Burns, Booth will be a huge underdog.

IBF light flyweight Luis Alberto Lazarte (48-9-1, 18 KO’s) of Argentina retained his title against now three-time world challenger Nerys Espinoza (29-6-1, 20 KOs) of Nicaragua. All three judges scored the bout 116-111.

Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico
WBC light flyweight champion Omar Nino (30-3-2, 12 KO’s) defended his title when Ronald Barrera (27-8-2, 17 KOs) didn’t come out for round seven. Nino was in command all the way.
WBA interim super featherweight champ Jorge Solis (39-2-2, 28 KO’s) defended his title with a sixth round TKO over previously unbeaten Francisco Cordero (23-0, 15 KO’s) at the Coliseo Olimpico. Solis floored Cordero in round one and again in round four. The one-sided fight was waved off in round six.
WBO flyweight champion Julio Cesar “Pingo” Miranda (33-5-1, 26 KOs) scored an eighth round TKO over Ronald Ramos (29-9-3, 15 KOs) to retain his title at the Arena Solidaridad in Monterrery, Mexico. Miranda dominated the fight until Ramos remained on his stool rather than come out for round nine.

WBA middleweight champion Felix Sturm (34-2-1, 14 KOs) won a 12 round unanimous decision over Giovanni Lorenzo (29-3, 21 KOs) on Saturday night at the Lanxess-Arena in Cologne, Germany. It took Sturm two rounds to shake off the rust from his 14 month layoff, but after getting on track in round three Sturm dictated the fight with his stiff jab. Lorenzo came on strong down the stretch, but it was too little too late as Sturm prevailed 117-111, 117-111, 118-111.
