Orozco vs Honorio bout at Del Mar sure to be memorable

If you’re a boxing fan at all, you know the above statement is a no-brainer. Martin Honorio has faced some of the best fighters in the sport. His opponent on Thursday night at the Del Mar Fairgrounds is Antonio”Relentless” Orozco. Orozco has been on this unstoppable trajectory to become the next junior welterweight Champion with a World Title shot getting closer and closer. Honorio is a pure boxer while Orozco comes straight at you with the hard shots to the body which in the end has his opponents dropping their hands to become easy prey for his knockout blow to the head.
San Diego’s Orozco (19-0, 15 KOs) has been making a steady, yet spectacular rise up the junior welterweight ladder, with his power earning him plenty of respect from his peers. Currently on a seven-bout knockout streak, the 26-year-old who trains at the House of Boxing in the San Diego neighborhood of Paradise Hills is coming off a second-round stoppage of Miguel Angel Huerta on January 24. He’s now looking to impress family and friends in this Golden Boy Live! main event on Fox Sports.

Perhaps the biggest test of Orozco’s career, Mexico City’s Martin “El Brochas” Honorio (32-8-1, 16 KOs) is a former USBA, NABF and NABO Champion who has fought the best in the game, with notable victories over former World Champion Steve Luevano, Giovanni Andrade and John Molina and most recently had this great battle against Argentina’s power-puncher Lucas Matthysse. Knowing Honorio, he will want to stop Orozco’s rise to the top by any means possible.
The much celebrated Martin “El Brochas” Honorio takes his turn on the scale. While Orozco weighed-in at 141 pounds, Honorio weighed 140 pounds.
Antonio Orozco (l) will have to overcome Martin Honorio’s stiff jab, his above average hand speed and his maneuverability that will make him an elusive target.
And what do we know about this promotional group that’s been putting on these Ringside at Del Mar shows? For one thing, they must have deep pockets when you consider the low ticket prices and the top talent they have been showcasing.
Like the producers of these primetime TV shows, these promoters understand that in order to be successful and hold on to their audience, they need to keep coming with the best talent and best match-ups. The same strategy followed by the leaders in boxing, Showtime and HBO. It’s like they’ve all patterned themselves after the Old West medicine man who would begin his solicitation or rant with, “You say you’re not satisfied? Well folks, I’m going to give you even more for your money!”
That’s just what our local promoters did for Thursday’s show at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. The original show produced by Paco Damian (Paco Presents), Don Chargin (Don Chargin Productions), Jorge Marron (Jorge Marron Productions), Gabriel Barron (Barron Entertainment) and Andy Perez (A & T Promotions) joined hands with Richard Schaefer of Golden Boy Promotions to add not only the additional blockbuster bout between rising star Orozco and Honorio, they made themselves available for TV as this special edition of “Ringside at Del Mar” Thursday, May 15 at the Del Mar Fairgrounds in Del Mar, CA will air live on FOX Sports 1 and FOX Deportes.
The previously announced Main Event, a 10-round junior featherweight contest between Manuel “Tino” Avila (14-0-0, 5 KOs) going up against David “Morita” De La Mora (25-5-0, 18 KOs) along with it’s co-featured bout, a six-round bantamweight bout between Paramount’s Manuel “Suavecito” Roman (16-2-3, 6 KOs) and Merida’s Jose “Cacho” Silveira (15-10-0, 6 KOs) were then demoted to co-featured bouts.
The former Main Event, a 10-round junior featherweight clash between Manuel “Tino” Avila versus David “Morita” De La Mora was demoted to a Co-feature.
The much anticipated 6-round bantamweight bout between Manuel “Suavecito” Roman (l) and Jose “Cacho” Silveira should also be very entertaining.
Also featured on the fight card will be some of San Diego’s top talent looking to continue building their fan bases in their young careers. Talented middleweight Elias “Latin” Espadas (5-1, 3 KOs) who trains at the Marron Boxing Camp in Lakeside, CA will face Jamal Harris (5-8-4, 3 KOs) of Los Angeles in a four round battle; San Diego super featherweight Prince “Tiger” Smalls (4-0-1) of the San Diego Boxing Academy will be taking on Tijuana’s Victor Serrano (3-4-0, 1 KO); Chula Vista super featherweight Jorge “Tito” Ruiz (6-1-0, 2 KOs) will face Walter Mechor Santibanes of Phoenix, Arizona (2-2) and super welterweight Tevin Watts (2-0-1) of Lancaster, CA will face 28 year-old Elliot Seymour (1-7-0, 1 KO) of Pasadena, CA.
Elias Espadas (r) weighed in at 160 pounds to face Jamal Harris who weighed 159.
Once again, Prince Tiger Smalls (r) puts his undefeated record on the line. This time he’ll be facing Victor Serrano who weighed-in at 128 pounds while Smalls maintained his featherweight status by only weighing 126 pounds.

In the world of sports it’s always helpful to seek advice from veterans and who better to learn from but Paul “Paulie” Malignaggi who is visiting San Diego for the very first time. The 33 year-old Fox Sports West boxing commentator and veteran of 38 professional fights is from Brooklyn, New York. AKA “The Magic Man” and well known for being Adrien Broner’s best buddy, Paulie is a former IBF Welterweight and WBA IBF Lightweight Champion.
The popular Roque “Rocky” Ramos weighed in at the exact weight but his opponent (name withheld) paid no attention to the required weight and in the end, their bout had to be cancelled.
Tevin Watts weighed 152 while Elliot Seymour (r) weighed 153.
Chargers star defensive tackle, D.J. Fluker, was on hand for the weigh-ins and of course everyone wanted a photo with this football great.
