Oh yeah! Local Pro Boxers go a perfect 7-0 on the weekend
On Friday evening at the Belasco Theater in Los Angeles, we see Genaro “El Conde” Gamez (l) in his Pro debut landing this solid left hook to the chin of Archie Weah (r) which resulted in a first round knockout.
On Friday night, April 15, 2016, at the Belasco Theater in Los Angeles, super featherweight Genaro “El Conde” Gamez (1-0, 1 KO) of San Diego had little if any trouble sending his opponent Archie Weah (1-6) of Norcross, Georgia into Lala land. The amateur sensation’s first round KO victory in his debut came at the 2:29 mark of round one. What a great way to start on that long and arduous sojourn to become one of the sport’s greatest champions.

On Friday afternoon, April 15, it was Luis “Pantera” Nery (l) of Tijuana facing off with his opponent Martín “Pini” Casillas of Mexico City at the weigh-ins.
In Mexico City on Friday night, April 15th, it was Tijuana’s Luis “Pantera” Nery coming away with a unanimous decision victory over Martin “Pini” Casillas to secure the WBC Continental Americas Bantamweight title.
On Saturday night, Luis “Pantera” Nery (19-0, 13 KOs) of Tijuana, B. C., Mexico had another great performance as he went on to win the WBC Continental Americas bantamweight title. Nery did so by defeating Martín “Pini” Casillas (15-7-1, 9 KOs) from Mexico City. The match, which took place at the Gimnasio Olimpico Juan de la Barrera, District Federal, Mexico City, Mexico was broadcast live on Azteca 7 on a Zanfer Promotions fight card.
With this future champion knocking his opponent down in both rounds one and four, the judges´scorecards of 100-99, 99-89 and 98-90 can attest to how one-sided the match was. Nery looked sensational in both attack mode and on defense.
On Friday afternoon, April 15, 2016, it was super lightweight Jose “Chon” Zepeda (l) of La Puente, Calif. facing off with his opponent Pedro “Vaquero” Navarrete of Mexico City.
In the co-feature, 26-year-old, super lightweight Jose “Chon” Zepeda (25-1, 21 KOs) of La Puente, Calif. won a unanimous decision over Pedro “Vaquero” Navarrete (29-23-3) of San Juan Zitlaltepec, México City, Mexico. Even after getting hit hard by a left hook to the liver and going down, the always tough Navarrette got back to his feet and finished out the fight. The durable Mr. Navarrete, now 34 years of age, has only six wins in his last 24 bouts.
This was Zepeda’s second fight in 2016. In January he scored a first round stoppage of former champion Ammeth Diaz. After Zepeda lost to the WBO champion Terry Flanagan on July 7, 2015, it’s been his firm resolve to earn a rematch. During that title fight with Flanagan, it was discovered that Zepeda had suffered a dislocated left shoulder in round two and that is the reason he quit at the end of round two.

It’s hard to say how much credit we can give the 48-year-old Mia St. John (49-14-2, 19 KOs) of Los Angeles for her win over the 35-year-old Lisa Lewis (0-1) at The Trust Arena in Auckland, New Zealand on Saturday night. For someone (St. John) who has only fought once a year over the last five years, she’s now won her last two fights over Lewis, a debutante and a 43 year old by the name of Tammy Franks who had a record of 2 wins, 25 losses and one draw when they met on October 23, 2015.

The headliner at the Grand Hotel Show in Tijuana on Friday night, Elvis “Rockanrolero” Torres of Tijuana (15-0-1, 9 KOs), got win number 15 over a gentleman by the name of Alem Robles of Los Mochis, Sinaloa, Mexico. Not to say it was a slam dunk but Robles had had just 4 wins in his last 14 matches. Also featured on the same fight card was David “Morita” De La Mora of Tijuana (26-6, 19 KOs) who destroyed Sergio Najera (10-24-2) of Tijuana. Surprisingly, prior to Friday’s meeting with Najera, the once highly touted De La Mora had won only twice in his last eight fights.
USA Amateur Boxing standout Gabriel “Baby Bull” Hernandez who now trains with Tiger Smalls at his gym on Mission Gorge Road in San Diego will be making his pro-debut on Thursday night, April 21st at the El Rancho Grande Sports Bar on Revolucion Blvd. in Tijuana. Tickets are still available.
