Margarito vs Pacquiao, the aftermath

Margarito scheduled for surgery on Tuesday

Antonio Margarito took such a beating on Saturday night that both his eyes were swollen shut and his face was a bloody mess. After the bout he was taken directly to a Dallas hospital via ambulance to have the cuts on his face examined. That’s when the injury to his eye socket was discovered. He’s remained hospitalized ever since, with doctors now waiting until the swelling goes down before they can perform surgery on a fractured right orbital bone. As of Monday evening, it’s expected that he’ll have that surgery sometime on Tuesday.

Monday, while still in his hospital bed Margarito issued the following statement: “I want to thank my fans for supporting me in this lopsided loss. I gave it all I had, but unfortunately I was not able to get the victory over the best fighter in the world today. As I said before the fight I was never going to quit and tried to win this fight to the very last minute.”

“In the sixth round he got me with a good body shot,” said Pacquiao immediately following the fight. “It’s really painful and I’m lucky to survive that round.”

Disparaging comment from Eric Raskin of Ring Magazine: “The absurd BS about how many titles Pacquiao has now won. Here you have two guys who had done nothing to get ranked at 154 pounds just fought for a belt that rightfully belongs to Sergio Martinez. If you want to call that a world championship fight, all you are is an unpaid member of Jose Sulaiman’s payroll.”
