CYAC “Battle on the Boulevard” boxing results

Once again, it was “Battle on the Boulevard” as the National City Coummunity Youth Athletic Center hosted their latest USA Amateur Boxing Show with competitors coming from near and far.
Bout #1 featured 25 year-old Han Tran (125.2 lbs.) of the Undisputed Gym going up against 21 year-old Kevin Salas (124 lbs.) of the Tolteca Boxing Club in San Ysidro.
Even though both boxers had their moments in round one, it was Salas landing the higher percentage of blows. By round two, Tran had begun this strategy of hit and then hold to smother his opponent. It worked for a while until Salas started feinting then taking one step back.
After round three, another nonstop action round, it was clear Salas had won over the judges, as it pertains to the punch stats.

Bout #2 featured 14 year-old Jason Meza (111.6 lbs.) of the Undisputed Gym Downtown going up against 15 year-old Daniel Andujo (111.2 lbs.) of the Temecula Boxing Club.
In round one, the shorter Andujo established he would be the aggressor and as he pressed forward, he’d often take one punch in order to deliver three punches in response. This pattern continued throughout rounds two and three and the winner was never in doubt.

Bout #3 featured 30 year-old cruiserweight Marco Mora (177 lbs.) of the City Boxing Gym in San Diego’s Downtown going up against 25 year-old super-middleweight Bryan Verner (168.2 lbs.) from Scottsdale, Arizona. While this was Mora’s third bout, the younger and lighter Verner was making his first Amateur start.
As predicted both came out swinging for the fences in round one with Mora landing more of the telling blows.
Nearing the close of the round two slugfest, it appeared Verner was tiring. Then, in the final round, both boxers gave it everything they had right up to the final bell. After tabulating the scores, Mora was awarded the decision.

Bout #4 featured an 18 year-old southpaw, lightweight by the name of Austin Brooks (134 lbs.) of the City Boxing Gym Downtown taking on a 25 year-old super lightweight by the name of Jorge Rivera (140 lbs.) from North County Boxing.
In this one you saw a little of everything, from the gestures of respect to the vicious infighting which made this bout a three round war.
Round one went into the Brooks’ column. He was getting off first and certainly maintained an edge in the punch count. Rivera made certain to even the score in round two and finished that round by catching Brooks with a dandy overhand right.
With round three deciding the match, Brooks went back to being a more conservative headhunter and had success landing the straight left to garner the close, split decision victory.

Bout #5 featured super-middleweights 20 year-old Gilberto Ledesma (161.6 lbs.) of North County Boxing going up against 27 year-old Emilio Rodriguez (164.2 lbs.) from 818 Boxing of Pacoima, Los Angeles, CA.
In round one, Rodriguez was masterful with the accurate and better leveraged punches. The only negative critique came from his corner who wanted him to keeps his hands up.
As the bout progressed each boxer got themselves into a nice rhythm. With their exchanges being so intense, both knew a touch of the gloves would be warranted and that’s just what happened at the close of rounds two and three.
After the scores were tallied and a split decision victory for Rodriguez was announced, there was some grumbling from the folks who thought Rodriguez had dominated from the opening bell.

In the final match of the day, Bout #6, they had lefty, 24 year-old Cris Price (142.8 lbs.) of the Pacific Training Center in La Jolla going up against 20 year-old Arnulfo Carreon (140.4 lbs.) from North County Boxing.
For the majority of this match, Price was in charge with his longer reach, surprise left hooks and better leveraged punches. To his credit Carreon did land his share of straight rights and on occasion landed the big overhand right to surprise Price who demonstrated that he does indeed have a chin made of granite.

The National City CYAC’s next show “Battle on the Boulevard” is scheduled for April 5, 2014 and will include the 2014 District Junior Olympic competition for boxers aligned with the local LBC 44.
