Alvarez versus Angulo, the promotion behind such an event

On Saturday, March 8, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez will face Alfredo “Perro” Angulo. If the event is a success, it’s because the promoters did all they could to sell the product.
This rant is meant for all the local boxing promoters, gym owners, equipment sales people, and venues where a boxing show has taken place. If you want to sell anything, you’ve got to get visibility and have people talking about you or your product. Hollywood has their previews, while grocery products introduce a product using a coupon or they send out a sample in the mail. These time honored devices work.
Even though promoters have their fight posters, websites, Facebook and YouTube at work selling tickets, they’re still falling way short, still reaching only a small segment of their potential customer base.
Suggestion: Could it be that you’re still not using the blossoming industry of video production that can produce a video that gets your message out there? The Who, What, When and Where. If you’re not, then you’re only reaching a minuscule portion of the people who could be swayed into enjoying such an event. When you produce a Pre-fight Preview of an event, you’re actually wetting a lot of lips.
Suggestion: It’s easy to expand your market by going after people who are already watching or attending other sporting events – so cross promote with other sports promoters.
Suggestion: Let the customer try it out. Tea bags were first used as giveaways so that people could sample tea without buying large tins. Giveaways have been a tried-and-true technique for getting people interested. How about offer people a tempting discount or a “buy one, get one” deal.
Suggestion: When you have local boxers on your fight card, why not have these guys or gals visit other gyms to train and possibly have them give either a class or just some pointers to the up and comers? This social interaction is a can’t miss method of selling tickets.
And finally, promote your fighters. After all, they are your Hollywood stars; the attraction we come to see.
