2013 Junior Olympic Great West Regional Championships

On Saturday and Sunday, May 18 and 19, Team Quest of Encinitas, CA was the host of this year’s USA Boxing’s Junior Olympic Great West Regional Championships.
For two days, May 18 and 19, 2013, Team Quest Xtreme Fitness of Encinitas, CA. graciously made their gym available for this year’s USA Amateur Boxing’s LBC #44 Junior Olympic Great West Regional Championships. The following write up and videos showcase the young talent that was on display.

Bout #1, in the 13-14 year-old, 90 pound classification, it was Rafael Delgado from the Southern California regional group defeating Rey Diaz of the Nevada group.

After having his arm raised often at the shows in San Diego, it was most likely a rude awakening for Rodolfo Ortigoza (l) to lose to Christopher Zavala on Saturday in Encinitas.
Bout #2, in the 13-14 year-old, 101 pound classification, it was Christopher Zavala of the So Cal group defeating Rodolfo Ortigoza representing the California Border region.
Bout #3, in the 13-14 year-old, 110 pound classification, it was Eric Puente from the California Border region defeating Jose Rodriguez from the Southern California group.
Bout #4, in the 13-14 year-old, 114 pound classification, it was Rommel Caballero of the So Cal group gaining the victory over David Marfil of the Nevada Region by virtue of a first round RSC (referee stops the contest).

The last name of Caballero should ring a bell. Rommel’s older brother, 22 year-old Randy “El Matador” Caballero from Coachella, Ca, is a fast rising super bantamweight in the pro ranks. In 2008, he was the U. S. Amateur Flyweight Champion and within three years of turning pro, won two minor belts, one the WBO NABO bantamweight title.
Bout #5, in the 15-16 year-old, 106 pound classification, it was Saul Sanchez from the Southern California regional group defeating Freodis Rojas from the Nevada group by way of a second round RSC (referee stops the contest).
Bout #6, in the 15-16 year-old group, it was Cesar Diaz (119 lbs.) of the So Cal group getting the victory over Alex Rodriguez (118 lbs.) of the Nevada Region by way of a third round RSC (referee stops the contest).
Bout #7, in the 15-16 year-old group, 125 pound classification, it was Garrett Rincon from the Southern California region getting the win over Dustin Somera from the Nevada group.
Bout #8, in the 15-16 year-old, 132 pound classification, it was George Gonsalez of the Southern California group gaining the victory over Andres Cortez of the Nevada Region.
Bout #9, in the 15-16 year-old 138 pound group, it was Ruben Torres of the Southern California group getting the victory over Jehvon Norris (118 lbs.) of the California Border Region.
Bout #10, in the 15-16 year-old, 110 pound female grouping, it was Adrianna “Nana” Coria from the Southern California region getting the victory over Alyson Vejar from the Nevada group.
Bout #11, in the 15-16 year-old, 119 pound female grouping, it was Krstyn Jimarez of the Southern California group gaining the victory over Samantha Espinoza of the California Border Region.

Bout #1, in the 113 pound, 13-14 year-old classification, it was Rommel Caballero of the Southern California Region getting the victory over Roman Gonzalez of the California Border group.
Bout #2, in the 15-16 age group, it was George Gonsalez (129.4 lbs.) of the Southern California Region gaining the victory over Adrian Hernandez (132 lbs.) from the California Border group.
Bout #3, in the 138 pound, 15-16 year-old grouping, it was Ruben Torres of the Southern California Region getting the nod over Isaac Lujan of the Nevada Region.
